5 Career Resolutions Everyone Should Make

5 Career Resolutions Everyone Should Make5 Career Resolutions Everyone Should MakeWhen youre not happy at work, making a New Years career resolution is easy Get a new job. (Or, get a raise, snag that promotion, make it through a work week without using profanity- plenty to choose from.)But when things are going well, you should totenstill be setting work-related goals for yourself. And what better time to do it than the new year?If you need some inspiration, weve compiled five career resolutions that everyone should make. Choose a couple or resolve to do them all- we guarantee youll set yourself up for success in 2012.1. Have an Annual Career Check-UpYou probably think about your job every day, but when was the belastung time you really thought about it? Kick off 2012 by taking yourself out to lunch or coffee, and writing down how youre feeling about your career. What makes you happy, and what would you like to change? Is your current job really what you want to be doing?Or, at the l east, is it helping you reach your goals? Also do some salary research- is your income in line with your field and position?Consider this process an annual check-up for your career health. If you feel good about everything- great But if there are things that could be improved, think about how you can fix them this year, whether thats taking on new responsibilities, working towards a promotion, or keeping your eye out for that next position.2. Update Your Resume (and Everything Else)Keeping your resume up-to-date is important for several reasons. For one, if a recruiter or a friend-of-a-friend calls out of the blue with a great job opportunity, youre going to want to have it ready to go. Plus, its a lot easier to update your accomplishments periodically, when theyre fresh in your mind, rather than trying to add in a couple of years of experience all at once. And while youre getting your resume in shape, go through the rest of your documents too- refresh your portfolio, edit your Linke dIn bio, and update (or create) a personal list of accomplishments (a running tally that you dont hand out, but thats helpful for talking points for cover letters and interviews). Also shoot your references a note to say hello- but really to make sure you have their updated contact information.3. Add a Bullet to Your Skills SectionEven if youre not adding a new job to your resume this year, you can still add to the other sections Make it your goal in 2012 to add at least one new bullet to Skills or Education. Are there technical skills that would make you more competitive in your field? Tools that could make your job (or your boss job) easier? A management class that would better position you for a promotion? For inspiration, check the LinkedIn profiles of your colleagues a step or two higher than you current position, and think about how you can add their areas of expertise to your own skill set.4. Expand Your NetworkContrary to popular belief, the best time to network isnt when you re looking for a job- its long before then. Why? Having a broad, diverse network already in place will make the job search that much easier- and besides, people tend to be happier to meet you when you dont have that desperate please help me get a job now tone in your voice. And before you say I hate networking and move on to the next resolution, remember that there are plenty of ways to make new connections outside of hitting the industry luncheon circuit. You could ask your boss to pay for a conference that looks interesting, ask a former co-worker and her new co-workers out to a happy hour, or, at the very least, join some LinkedIn groups. At minimum, try to meet one new person every month (youll have a dozen new contacts by this time next year). If youre feeling really ambitions, try Classy Career Girls 4x4 Networking Challenge to meet four new people and strengthen four existing relationships- every month5. Be mora ProductiveThere are plenty of techniques out there to help people be more productive- check out the Pomodoro Technique, time blocking, and anything on WorkAwesome. Different approaches work for everyone, but I guarantee theres some method or trick out that will work for you, and help you save time, streamline a process, or just generally get stuff done a better way. So, make it goal to try at least four new ones this year, and see what works for you. (For bonus points organize your inbox so youre not spending an hour each day deleting Groupons and sale announcements.)Career advancement is a year-round process, but why not let the momentum of January help kick-start your success? Heres to a great yearWhat career resolutions will you be making this year?Check out more from Job Search Month at The Daily MusePhoto courtesy of David Joyce.

3 Ways to Fix Your Resume

3 Ways to Fix Your Resume3 Ways to Fix Your ResumeYour resume is the first impression you make to an employer, networking contact or your boss when youre asking for a raise. It should represent your skills (hard and soft skills), your experience, education and your brand and is a critical piece to any job search or request for promotion. Most professionals know how important a resume is, but many of them struggle to ensure it tells the right story. Why is it so hard to make sure your resume is in good shape? Keeping your resume up to date and truly effective for your search is difficult becauseIt requires being detail-oriented, which is not everyones strength. You have to be objective about yourself, which is not always easy. You have to sell yourself, and many people hesitate to brag about themselves.See The 25 Best Jobs of 2018.All of this can feel daunting and like too much pressure, especially when you consider very few business leaders have a solid and defined personal brand, and e mployers spend 10 to 15 seconds scanning a resume before they decide to consider or toss a candidate. Here are three ways to fix your resume to ensure that it properly represents you and stays out of the toss pile.First of all, develop your personal brand. If you arent sure what your personal brand is, start by asking friends and family members what makes you unique. What are your strengths? Many times we discount what comes naturally to us, and that impacts our confidence and ability to sell ourselves. You could also ask co-workers or teammates what they appreciate about you. See Tips for Surviving a Career Transition.Once you have a better understanding of who you are and what you have to offer the professional world, you can start to form your branding ansicht. Your branding statement is composed of four parts who, what, how and why. Who do you serve or who is your target market? What unique value do you provide? How do you deliver? Why should they believe you? When you have formed your branding statement, you will want to include it on your resume. For example, it could be part of your professional summary. Your summary lets potential employers know right away who you are and your expertise. The next thing to watch out for is formatting mistakes. Formatting mistakes can includeUsing too many font styles and sizes. Pick one font and size for the heading and one font and size for the body of your resume. This keeps your document easy on the eyes. Inconsistency when using tabs, punctuation, spacing and bullets. Follow the same rules throughout your resume.Margins that are too small. Page margins should be a minimum of 0.6 inches. Not using enough white space on the page. White space is your friend. It can be used to emphasize or play down information. Without white space your resume becomes difficult for potential employers to scan. Underlining information. We recommend that you skip underlining, since this can distort information when scanned into an ap plicant tracking system. You can use formatting properly to play to your brand. You can do this by making sure your name stands out. Dont be afraid for your name to be larger than the rest of the content. Once you have decided on a header that properly represents you, make sure to use the same header on your cover letter. Remember, these documents are your personal absatzwirtschaft materialsSee 8 Ways Millennials Can Build Leadership Skills. Finally, when working on your resume, keep in mind that it is not a one-size-fits-all document. You will want to tailor your resume to each job you are applying for to ensure you highlight that you have the relevant skills and expertise needed for the position. If these items are not clear to a potential employer, no matter how great your resume looks, it will be put aside. To make sure your resume is tailored to the position you are applying for, analyze the job description to find the skills, expertise and any key words and phrases used to desc ribe their ideal candidate. That is the information you will use to make sure your resume is concise, targeted and relevant to that specific role. We recommend creating a master copy of your resume and then saving other versions of your resume for different positions.

Four easy ways you can be more relaxed at work today

Four easy ways you can be more relaxed at work todayFour easy ways you can be more relaxed at work todayStress isnt something we can avoid if we want to succeed. It will happen what makes us successful is learning how to manage it.Resilience is about how you recharge, leid how you endure, happiness experts Shawn Achor and Michelle Gielan wrote last year. That makes sense we spend most of our lives at work, and if its nonstop stress during those hours, then our entire existence is colored by it and our personalities could change for the worse. Here are some things you can do inside and outside the office to be a more relaxed person.Be mindfulWhen youre worrying about the zillions of things you have you have to finish by the end of the work day,try using mindfulness tohelp you stay focused in the moment, and on the task at hand.In this2016 Harvard Business Review article, Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter wrote about a 10-minute mindfulness exercise that you can use when you get to w ork in the morning,Close your eyes, relax, and sit upright. Place your full focus on your breath. Simply maintain an ongoing flow of attention on the experience of your breathing inhale, exhale inhale exhale. To help your focus stay on your breathing, count silently at each exhalation. Any time you find your mind distracted, simply release the distraction by returning your focus to your breath. Most important, allow yourself to enjoy these minutes. Throughout the rest of the day, other people and competing urgencies will fight for your attention. But for these 10minutes, your attention is all your own, they wrote.Jason Marsh, director of programs for the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, told the Greater Good Science Center about how mindfulness benefits you at work, including promoting empathy and building resilience and positive emotions.Do yogaSometimes its best to stretch it out.Yoga can literally loosen you up at work, and more companies are encouraging it as a result .New York Times reporter David Gelles wrote about the transformative effects of meditation and yoga programs on employees at insurance company Aetna, which were introduced by CEO Mark T. Bertolini. Employees who took at least one yoga class gained an average of 62 minutes of productivity per week and benefitted from a 28% reduction in stress levels. Even if youre not flexible,Greatist reported in 2015 that software company SAS has offered employees access to free healthy-living seminars, and a recreational and fitness center with access to yoga and massage studios, among other perks. Online medical care scheduling service Zocdoc had free in-office yoga classes each week. The Huffington Post even madea list of 5 office-friendly yoga poses, like the Seated Backbend, Wrist Release, and Seated Twist.Turn your YouTube to natureIf you work in an open office environment, you may find it difficult to focus- but sounds of the outside world might just do the trick.Embrace the outdoors.A 2015 study published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found that science backs the importance of a walk outside for ability to concentrate and increasing overall worker satisfaction.Dr. Jonas Braasch, an associate professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a co-author of the 2015 study, told the Huffington Post about the impact natural noises can have in restoring our cognitive abilities - so even if you lose focus, you can regain it with some nature sounds.Even if youre stuck inside under fluorescent lighting and low ceilings, theres nothing like the sound of rain. YouTube has a variety of options, including this long, soothing soundscape of wind through the silent Arcticand this surprisingly soothing spa-like run of plinky piano music over burbling water. Try listening to videos of various nature sounds online to get calm during the day, or downloading an app like Brainwave that plays soothing nature sounds.Do some improvTheater skills can also help you l earn how to loosen up in the office. Rebecca Waber of innovation and strategy consulting firmInnosight told Forbes about how starting to take improv classes for fun made her presentation style better. You need to be comfortable not only with objective facts but with emotion and expressiveness, and the emotional side of decisions and organizational dynamics is critically important to successful interactionsIts not necessarily easy for everyone to do both the cognitive and the emotional side, but its very important for a leader and consultant to have that expressive, emotional, vulnerability, Waber told Forbes.Google, MetLife, PepsiCo and McKinsey are among the companies that have had them, according to Forbes. In terms of schools, MIT, Duke, UCLA, Stanford and Notre Dames Executive MBA program have all taught improv classes, according to Fast Company.Finding ways to relax at work should help get you in your element and spark your creativity.

How to Create a Sales Campaign

How to Create a Sales CampaignHow to Create a Sales CampaignSales campaigns are a great way to make a push for more ausverkauf in a short time. A schlussverkauf campaign is a planned sales strategy that uses one or more channels to reach leads and convert them into customers. Most sales campaigns run for a limited time only, which is part of their appeal by putting a time limit on the campaign, both salespeople and prospects are motivated to move quickly on sales. Plan Ahead An effective sales campaign requires some planning and forethought. The first step is to decide on your campaign goals. Then you must set your campaign parameters how much youll spend on materials, which sales channels youll use, the nature of any special offers youll have during the course of the campaign, how long it will run, and possibly extra goals and bonuses for the sales team. When you set your goals, be specific. It often helps to set the main goal and a stretch goal for example, the main goal mig ht be to sell 5,000 units of your new product, and a stretch goal might be to sell 8,000 units. Your goals will help determine the rest of the campaigns form because once you know your target, youll roughly know how long it should take to reach those goals (and thus how long the campaign will run) as well as how much money it makes sense to spend on your campaign. If your goal of 5,000 units sold will net you about $50,000 in profits, it makes sense to spend $2,000 organizing your campaign but it doesnt make sense to spend $40,000 since that would pretty well wipe out your profits even if you achieve your goal. Make Educated Offers Your expected profits will also determine the nature of the special offer if any, that you give to prospective customers. Any campaign will do better if you can offer a deal since any limited time offer adds a sense of urgency that motivates prospects to buy quickly. It also appeals to the natural desire to get something for nothing or at least, som ething for much less than its worth. But youll need to choose a special offer that wont dig too deeply into your profits. The exception to this rule is the loss leader campaign. This type of sales campaign is designed not to make money but to entice prospects into becoming customers, even if the company doesnt profit immediately. A loss leader campaign works well if you have other products you can sell to existing customers that WILL make you a great deal of money. One classic example is the checking account. Banks will give money or gifts to customers when they open a checking account because they know that customer is likely to also open other accounts, such as savings and investment products, and those accounts are where the banks make their money. Motivation Is Key Once youve decided on the terms of the campaign, youll need to think about how you can motivate your sales team to make the campaign succeed. Without cooperation from the salespeople in the trenches, even the best -planned campaign will fail. So most sales campaigns are best accompanied by some extra compensation for the sales team. The easiest and possibly most motivating tool is, of course, cash. For example, if your campaign is intended to promote your new product, you might offer the sales team double their prototyp commission for that product only. Or you might set up a contest, where the salesperson who sells the most units of the new product gets a big bonus. If funding is running a bit short, you can also try some non-monetary rewards. If youre not sure what to offer the sales team, go to the source ask your salespeople what kinds of rewards (other than cash) theyd like to get.

Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 1

Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 1 Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 1 Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat, Part 1Mention miniaturization and smart sensors and most people immediately think of better and smaller electronics. But nowhere are advancements in sensor technology, as well as materials science and engineering, having greater impact than in the medical field.Developments are leading to mora and more noninvasive wearable devices for personalized healthcare. This allows continuous, real-time patient monitoring and assessment of everything from glucose levels and temperature changes to blood pressure and neurological functions. Now researchers at the Tufts University School of Engineering have developed miniaturized sensors that mount on a tooth and continuously track what a person eats. In real time, data is transmitted wirelessly via radio waves to a digital device such as a mobile phone. Experts believe such information will help heal th care specialists find links between what people eat and their health.Naturally derived materials have a lot of opportunity for interfaces and functionalization and also offer opportunity to bring together technology and biology. Dean Fiorenzo Omenetto, Tufts University Chewing has been used in wearable sensor systems for the automatic detection of food intake. They tested people after they gargled mouthwash, drank apple juice, alcohol, soup, and water as well as tested them with a dry mouth. The researchers believe these sensors can be adapted to transmit a much wider variety of information that could enable the detection and recording of many nutrients, chemicals, and physiological states. The work i s taking place in the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics and Advanced Biomaterials Technology Lab and led by Fiorenzo Omenetto, dean of research in the school of engineering and hochschulprofessor of biomedical engineering at Tufts. Were basically a biomaterials group, Omenetto says. Naturally derived materials have a lot of opportunity for interfaces and functionalization and also offer opportunity to bring together technology and biology. We transform proteins into a multitude of formats. We look at devices that can be implanted. The tiny sensor Omenettos team developed is flexible enough to conform and bond to the irregular surface of a tooth. They describe it as operating much like a highway toll system works, with sensors transmitting data wirelessly in response to an incoming radiofrequency signal. The 2mm-by-2mm sensor is made up of three layers, a central layer of material that absorbs the nutrient encapsulated between layers of square-shaped gold rings, which are reverse-facing split ring resonators. When the middle layer absorbs the nutrients, it swells and the gold rings move apart. Together, the three layers act like a tiny antenna, collecting and transmitting waves in the radio frequency spectrum. The type of nutrient detected ascertains the spectrum and intensity of the radio frequency waves transmitted, enabling identification and measurement of the nutrient.Part 2 of Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat explores how the team built the device and the changes future versions of it will undergo.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Read MoreSolar-Powered DronesGo MainstreamArtificial Intelligence Transforms ManufacturingHandheld Dronut Brings Drones Indoors For Further Discussion
